The word "dyslexia" comes from the Greek meaning "difficult with words". It is a difference in the part of the brain which process language and can affect the skills of reading, writing and numeracy. Dyslexia is one of a range of specific learning difficulties and perhaps the best known. Many dyslectic people are extremely creative, think laterally and have excellent problem solving skills. It may be helpful to think of dyslexia as an information processing difficulty.
Dyslexia is a complex learning difficulty because of the number of characteristics associated with it, such as poor short-term memory or confusion about left or right. Characteristics vary from individual to individual.
While there is no clear inheritance pattern, it is usually familial in incidence. Dyslexia is more prevalent in males than females, three times as many males as females are severely affected. A gene, which may be responsible for dyslexia, has been identified.
Pre-natal diagnosis NONE.
Early recognition and skilled specialist teaching can alleviate the effects of dyslexia.
