Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG's)

A disabled facilities grant may be available to provide facilities and adaptations to help disabled people to live as independently and comfortably as possible in their own homes. It must NOT be assumed that a client will automatically qualify for a grant, as they are means tested. A ceiling of £30,000 will be put on each disabled facilities grant, irrespective of the applicant assessed contribution. The Housing Authority pays for the grant, but has to consult with the Social Services Department to find out if you need the adaptation or equipment and whether it will be appropriate for you. The Council must give you a decision in writing within six months of receipt of a completed valid application and of any additional information they may require.

Examples of the type of work are:

  • To make it easier to get in and out of the home by widening doors and installing ramps.
  • To make the home safer for the disabled person and people in the household by providing a specially adapted room where it would be safe to leave a disabled person unattended or improve lighting for better visibility.
  • To provide or improve access to the bathroom, kitchen and toilet, washbasin and bath or shower facilities by installing a stair lift or providing a downstairs bathroom.
  • Adapt heating or lighting controls so that they are easier to use.
