Ramps

Requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.

GENERAL SITUATION
Ramps are essential for wheelchair users (and parents with pushchairs) in coping with changes in level, usually outdoors but sometimes within buildings. They can, however, be difficult to negotiate by some ambulant disabled people who may find steps easier to use.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

  1. A slope with a gradient of not more than 1:20 over a distance of 10 metres can be regarded as 'level' and thus may not need any special consideration. Similarly, a slope of 1:15 over 5 metres to 1:12 over 2 metres is entirely acceptable, but these are the maximum gradients.
  2. Where, in adapting a building, the above gradients are likely to be exceeded, the use of a short-rise lift may be more appropriate.
  3. Handrails should be provided (see factsheet on 'HANDRAILS'). They should be clearly distinguishable from their background and be made from materials which are not cold to the touch.
  4. Surface materials should be slip-resistant, firmly fixed and easy to maintain.

CHECKLIST

  1. Can the slope be negotiated without too much difficulty? ( )
  2. Are handrails adequate and at the right height? ( )
  3. Do handrails extend beyond the ends of the ramp? ( )
