Requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.

GENERAL SITUATION
The area of an unobstructed wall that a person in a wheelchair can reach to operate switches etc., is fairly limited.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

  1. Access to wall-mounted switches, sockets, bell pushes, etc., should not be obstructed by the placing of furniture or fittings, but should allow a person in a wheelchair to manoeuvre alongside the wall.
  2. In general, all these items plus entry phones, TV sockets and telephone jack points, should be within a band of 400 mm and 1,200 mm from the floor level.

CHECKLIST

  1. Are switches and sockets within the acceptable range of heights from floor level? ( )
  2. Is the area around switches and sockets free from unnecessary obstruction? ( )
