You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, Set-top boxes, Video or DVD recorders, Computers or Mobile Phone to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV. The licence covers the person named on it and any other member of his/her household.

The full cost of a Television Licence from the 1st of April 2008 is £139.50.
A Black and White Television Licence is £47.00.

Registered Blind (or Severley Sight Impaired)

If you or someone you live with is registered blind, you qualify to receive a 50% concession on the cost of your TV licence. If the person who is registered blind is not the current licence holder for your address, it is first necessary to transfer the licence into their name. This can be done by telephoning TV Licensing on 0844 800 6790.

To claim the concession, a copy of the certificate from your local authority or ophthalmologist indicating that you are registered blind, needs to be provided. It should be posted, along with your licence renewal notice (if you have one) and the payment, by cheque or postal order, to TV Licensing, Blind Concession Group, Bristol BS98 1TL. Remember to include your name, address, telephone number and TV Licence number.

This year, the cost of a TV licence for anuone who is registered blind will be £69.75 for a Colour Licence and £23.50 for a Black and White.

Free TV Licences for the over 75s

Anyone who is 75 or over will be entitled to a free Over 75 TV licence for their main address, even if they live with younger relatives or friends. If not the current licence holder, the name on the existing licence needs to be amended to the person claiming the concession. This can be done by telephoning 0844 800 6790. This does not mean there is an exemption from having a licence.

A licence holder aged 74, who will turn 75 before the renewal of the licence is due, is qualified to buy a Short Term TV Licence, covering their main address until their 75th birthday. Payment covers just the number of months between the licence renewal date and the birthday month.

Residential Care Concession Licence.

Retired persons over 60 years of age and disabled persons, living in accommodation covered by a concessionary licence, may be able to obtain a licence to cover the use of a TV in their own accommodation for an annual fee of £7.50.

An ARC (Accommodation for Residential Care) Concessionary Licence is a special licence for people in these categories who live in certain types of accommodation. The authority or organisation responsible for your accommodation must make the application on your behalf. A person who watches TV only in communal rooms does not need a licence.
