The Disability Discrimination Act
From December 1996 new laws came into effect which protects disabled people in the area of employment.
The Act makes it unlawful for employers to discriminate against employees who have a disability. Disabled people will no longer be able to register and employers must make reasonable changes to their workplaces so that a disabled employee is not disadvantaged.

Job Introduction Scheme
The Job Introduction Scheme is available to all disabled people who, in the opinion of the Disability Employment Advisor, are suited to a job but need to demonstrate their capabilities to a new employer. The Employment Service will pay £75.00 per week to a firm if it agrees to give a 6 week trial period to a disabled person. In some cases the trial period can be extended to 13 weeks. The job can be full or part-time but it must be expected to last for at least six months after the scheme payments have stopped. J.I.S. must be applied for before the job is started.
The New Deal
New Deal is a key element of the Governments Welfare to Work Strategy. Created to help people find lasting, worthwhile work.
It offers individually tailored, practical help and support to improve a person's job prospects and to build up the skills needed by local businesses.
Minimum Wage
From 1st October 2007 the Minimum Wage is £5.52 per hour for workers aged 22 and over, £4.60 for 18 - 21 years olds (Development rate) and £3.40 per hour for 16 or 17 year olds (Development rate).
The lower rate can also apply to other workers, who are receiving accredited training, during the first 6 months in a job with a new employer.
