What is the Motability Scheme?

Motability is a National Charity which helps disabled people who are in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (higher rate mobility component) or War Pensioners Mobility supplement to be able to use this allowance to obtain a car, powered wheelchair or scooter. In this factsheet we have concentrated on the Mobility Car Scheme, but if you require further information on the Mobility Powered Wheelchair/Scooter Scheme, please contact DIAL Doncaster. Motability offer two types of Car Scheme:

• The Contract Hire Scheme.
• The Hire Purchase Scheme.

If you choose the Contract Hire Package, you must have at least 12 months award length remaining when the application is made. For those choosing to buy a car with a Hire Purchase Agreement, it is normally expected that you will be receiving the allowance for the full length of the Agreement. With the Contract Hire Scheme you do not have to be the driver. You can nominate up to two drivers who may be relatives or friends, and parents or carers can apply on behalf of a child aged three years and older. As from December 2011 the nominated driver/s must live within 5 miles of you, the Motability customer.

Please Note: As from January 2012 Motability will no longer accept nominated drivers under the age of 21 onto the scheme unless they live with the Motability customer.

Financial Help

Motability may be able to offer financial help to customers who would otherwise be unable to afford the mobility solution that they need to remain or become independent. For example, to help with the cost of:

• Adaptations.
• Advance payments - on standard production cars.
• Driving lessons.

Driving lessons.
Financial help for driving lessons is now only available from Motability for young drivers (aged 16 - 24) who receive the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance.

The Blue Badge Scheme
People who are in receipt of High Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance and others at the discretion of the Social Services department are eligible for a Blue Badge. The badge allows parking concessions when it is displayed in the car windscreen, and the person named on the badge is using the vehicle.

Road Tax Exemption
Exemption from road tax payments is given to people who are in receipt of High Rate Mobility component of Disability Living Allowance or their appointee, i.e. a person who uses their car for the sole use of a person in receipt of High Rate Mobility Component, and to people in receipt of War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement. Forum of Motability Centres
The Forum of Mobility Centres are an independent network of organisations that are recognised by Motability and the DVLA. They can offer advice and assessments to individuals who have a medical condition or are recovering from an injury or accident which may have affected their ability to drive or to get in and out of a motor vehicle.
