Before going on holiday you need to ensure that you have an adequate holiday insurance policy that will cover your illness or disability. This can be arranged at the time of booking your holiday. Even if you are going to a country that has a reciprocal healthcare agreement with the UK, (where the European Health Insurance Card, EHIC can be used), you may still have to pay for some of your medical treatment.

Although most Travel Agents can supply a comprehensive policy of travel insurance with usual types of cover, for example, cancellation, curtailment, loss or damage of personal property, the policy may not be suitable for a disabled traveller. Some policies do not cover a 'pre-existing' medical condition or disability. You need to check and make sure that the travel insurance you are offered does cover you for a 'pre-existing' medical condition or disability. You should make sure that the insurer is made aware of the relevant facts about your medical condition or disability. The insurer may ask you to contact a freephone medical screening helpline number to answer some questions about your condition or disability.

It is also important that you have a policy that covers any equipment you may be taking with you, such as a wheelchair. This type of equipment is unlikely to be covered by a standard travel insurance policy. You should check your household insurance policy as sometimes items like a wheelchair may be covered.

Under the Disability Discrimination Act, (now replaced by the Equality Act 2010), it is unlawful to refuse to insure a person, increase the premium or reduce the level of cover, simply on the basis of a person's disability. However, an insurance provider may be able to justify treating you differently if they can show that there is a greater risk involved in insuring a disabled person. This decision can only be made based on information such as a medical report. The special rules on insurance are explained in The Code of Practice - Rights of Access.
