Eligibility: Full membership and associate membership open to all disabled people.
We are a user led organisation committed to raising aspirations and confidence amongst disabled people to lead independent lives with dignity, choice and control. We provide information, advocacy, training and peer support. We campaign on the rights of disabled people to lead independent lives. We work in partnership with service providers to influence and challenge policies and decisions.
We meet monthly as a group and maintain an active website with an e-forum for posting questions and news section and Twitter for relevant up to date news and issues.
We now have an active Online PA Register where people interested in PA work can post a short resume and people looking to employ a PA can post an advert.
We are trained advocates with years of experience of managing our own care and support and of employing PA s. We can support you through all stages of getting and managing your care and support. We can be with you when you meet social workers or other professionals, guide you through the assessment process, ensure you are receiving the welfare benefits you are entitled to and even advocate for you at employment tribunal's.
Recruiting and Selecting Personal Assistants
We can provide template adverts and application forms and help you to short list candidates for interview.
We have a database of people looking for work as a PA and who have completed an application form.
Through our partnership with Job Centre Plus, we can support you to get adverts placed directly with the local job centre within the health and social care department. If this is not successful, they can place your advert within their own page in the Free Press at no cost. The job centre can provide a free interview room and we can help you to select your PA.
Being a responsible employer
Being an individual employer does come with some important responsibilities, but with support and guidance it should not be difficult for you and your PA to have a successful working relationship.
We can advise you on induction for your PA and on establishing work rotas and timesheets.
Once your PA is established, we can help ensure you are meeting all your employer responsibilities, including sick pay, holiday pay, policies and procedures.
If, for whatever reason, there are problems between you and your PA we can mediate between you to try to resolve the issue or advise you on terminating someone's contract safely and legally.
The role of a PA is quite different to that of a formal paid to carer so we have designed training for anyone interested in being a PA.
We strongly recommend you register your PAs with the National Minimum Dataset (NMDS) as this gives you access to funding for training for both you as an employer and your PA.
