Family Holiday Association
The Family Holiday Association is the only national charity dedicated to helping disadvantaged families access holidays. The charity helps to provide breaks away from home for economically and socially deprived children and their families throughout the UK. Typically, the families are affected by severe financial hardship and with extra difficulties such as long-term or terminal illness, violence or abuse, depression, disability or overcrowded and inadequate housing. Families must have at least one child between the ages of 3 and 18, be on low income, and not have had a holiday for the last 4 years.
The Family Holiday Association helps towards the cost of a UK seaside break with a voucher to cover the accommodation costs, usually at a holiday centre of caravan site run by organisations such as Butlins or Haven, and if possible a modest grant as a contribution towards expenses. Applications for holidays are referred to the charity's Programme Team from various welfare sources such as social workers, GPs, health visitors and both voluntary and statutory agencies. Referrals also come from national charities such as Barnardos and Family Action as well as smaller local voluntary organisation. As a small charity the Family Holiday Association cannot have direct contact with families so all correspondence and information is sent via the referrers, who support and the family throughout the process.
