Next Generation Text Service
To enable deaf, deaf/blind, deafened, hard of hearing and speech impaired people to communicate with hearing people anywhere in the world over the telephone network.
- BT telephone relay service providing a link between the textphone user and hearing person at the other end of the line, by means of a highly trained Relay Assistant who understands the needs of deaf and speech-impaired people and the need to provide a discreet and confidential service.
- Trained Relay Assistants relay what people say by typing it out and this then appears on the user's telephone, the other persons response is then typed in by the Relay Assistant and this appears on their screens.
- Providing an emergency relay service for 999 calls on 18000.
Costs: When people use the Text Relay service they will be billed by their communication provider. The call rates should be the same as with any other call, including premium rate or local rate numbers. Calls to freephone numbers should not be charged. We would advise that all billing issues are checked with the Text Relay user's communication provider. There is no charge for the Relay Assistant. If no connection is made, there is no charge.
