Description:
National Charity offering advice and support for older people and carers.

Aims:

  • To promote a society where older people are valued and respected through offering advice, grants and the provision of research and training.
  • To provide services for older people and their carers.
  • To champion the rights of older people and their relatives.
  • To advise and empower them with up-to-date information.
  • To research and develop new services.
  • To educate and support service providers.

Activities:

  • Free advice service on - welfare benefits, accommodation, residential care, community care, hospital discharge, nursing homes and advocacy on community care issues.
  • Telephone helpline.
  • Giving advice and information to older people, their relatives and carers.
  • Grants - administers a number of trust funds from which single payments can be made for items such as telephone installations, household goods and holidays.
  • Research and campaigning - The information gathered by Counsel and Care puts them in a position to comment on a variety of social policy issues. They are particularly active on various aspects of the quality of residential care including privacy, the use of physical restraint, elder abuse and consumer views.
  • Training - Counsel And Care's Training and Conference department have developed an extensive programme of training courses and conferences relevant to improving the quality of care for older people.
  • Development work independently and in partnership.
