Description:
The Equality and Human Rights Commission brings together the work of the three existing Commissions, the Commission for Racial Equality, Disability Rights Commission and the Equal Opportunities Commission in this new body.

The EHRC takes on all of the powers of the existing Commissions as well as new powers to enforce legislation more effectively and promote equality for all. It also promotes awareness and understanding of human rights and encourage good practice by public authorities in meeting their Human Rights Act obligations. The Commission covers England, Scotland and Wales. In Scotland and Wales there are statutory committees responsible for the work of EHRC.

Mission Statement:
The Equality and Human Rights Commission will be the independent advocate for equality and human rights in Britain. The EHRC aims to reduce inequality, eliminate discrimination, strengthen good relations between people, and promote and protect human rights.

It will enforce equality legislation on age, disability, gender, race religion or belief, sexual orientation or transgender status, and encourage compliance with the Human Rights Act 1998.

The EHRC will work to bring out effective change, using its influence and authority to ensure that equality and human rights remain at the top of agendas for government, employers and society. It will campaign for social change and justice.

The EHRC will act directly and by fostering partnerships at local, regional and national levels. It will stimulate debate on equality and human rights. It will give advice and guidance to businesses, the voluntary and public sectors and also to individuals.
