Changing the way adults and children face disfigurement.
Aims:
- To provide support and information to people with facial disfigurement
- To raise awareness to the issues surrounding facial disfigurement.
Activities:
Free help, advice and information to adults and children with disfigurements and their families via:
- Individual support face-to-face, on the phone or by letter.
- Workshops and other group activities.
- Support for your child to deal with difficulties at school.
- Contact with others with similar conditions.
- Advice for employment concerns and job coaching for those seeking employment.
- Help to make informed decisions about surgical and medical treatment.
Working with support groups for children and/or adults who have disfigurements offering:
- Tailor-made programmes to help run groups for children, parents or adults.
- Support, ideas and self-help guides for group leaders and members.
Helping health professionals to develop best practice in health and social services by providing:
- Training courses and study days.
- Support, information and advice from their outreach team.
- Advice on developing new models of health care.
- Training manuals and self-help guides.
Working with teachers and educational professionals to support pupils with disfigurements, offering:
- A modular Teacher's Guide about disfigurement.
- Advice on supporting pupils who have concerns about their appearance.
- Assembly ideas and projects aimed at raising awareness.
- Speakers for classroom activities and assemblies.
Helping employers and service providers to develop best practice in employment, customer service and equal opportunities, offering:
- Specific information on disfigurement to meet responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act.
- Advice on how to develop appropriate equal opportunities policies.
- Training and consultancy for staff.
