Description:
Government appointed body co-ordinating/regulating charities.
The Charity Commission for England and Wales was established by law as the regulator and register of charities in England and Wales and was appointed under the Charities Act 1993 principally to further the work of charities by giving advice and information and checking abuses.

Aims:
To provide the best possible regulation of charities in order to increase charities efficiency and effectiveness and public confidence in the integrity of charities and trust in them.

Activities:

• Maintains a public register of charities.
• Investigates misconduct and the abuse of charitable assets, and takes/recommends remedial action.
• Gives advice to charity trustees.
• Makes "Schemes and Orders" to modernise the purposes and administrative machinery of charities.
• Deals with Annual Returns about administration, financial management and governance. Sample forms are available from their website and there is a helpline to deal with queries about Annual Returns (Tel: 0870 333 0123)

Four Charity Commission offices deal with different geopgraphical regions:

• London.
• Liverpool.
• Taunton.
• Newport.
