Description:
Charity dedicated to research on the causes, treatment and prevention of cancer.
Cancer Research UK began operating in February 2002 as a result of the merger between the Cancer Research Campaign and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund.
Aims:
- To carry out world class research into cancer.
- To develop better treatments for cancer patients.
- To improve the quality of life of cancer patients.
- To reduce the number of people getting cancer.
- To improve training and support of cancer research workers.
- To provide authoritative information and advocacy on cancer.
Activities:
- Providing an information service about cancer and cancer care, written especially for patients and their families.
- Consistantly raising funds to carry out research into cancer.
- Raising awareness of cancer, via various publications and the internet and also raising awareness of Cancer Research UK and its mission.
- Supporting almost 500 research group leaders throughout the UK via a variety of funding mechanisms, including research institutes, clinical centres, program and project grants and fellowships.
- The development and implementation of scientific and clinical training to improve and maintain the base of UK cancer researchers.
- A directory of researchers, on their website which allows people to identify any Cancer Research UK scientist via searches by name, research keyword, geographic location or research centre.
