Organisation protecting civil liberties and human rights.

Aims:

  • To help people who need legal help with their human rights.
  • To secure equal rights and liberties for everyone.
  • To oppose any abuse or excessive use of power by the state against its people.
  • To build a popular culture of rights, so that people know and value the rights they have and the power to challenge abuses.
  • To secure positive rights that are based in law.

Activities:

  • Campaigning nationally and through local groups on a wide range of rights issues including criminal justice, the rights of travellers, lesbian and gay rights, the rights to peaceful protest and the right of silence.
  • Providing legal teams who pursue test cases through the British courts and challenge decisions made in this country in the European Court of Human Rights.
  • Providing advice and information about human rights which includes written information about the legal position relating to rights issues, and in some instances Liberty can provide people with advice about specific cases.
  • Lobbying Parliament.
  • Challenging unjust laws.
  • Analysing where current policies may take us.
  • Providing facts, figures and briefings on current rights to MP's and members of the House of Lords.
  • Acting as a watchdog on human rights and any changes in legislation.
  • Researching a wide range of rights issues.
  • Organising Human rights training courses.
  • Providing guidance to thousands of people every year.
  • Runs two specialist advice lines Monday and Thursday 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, Wednesday 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm.

Providing confidential advice and referrals on all civil liberties and human rights issues including:

  • Problems with the police.
  • Discrimination.
  • Access to your file.
  • Privacy.
  • Rights at work.
  • Rights of prisoners.
  • Mental health patients.
  • Immigrants and travellers.
