Description:
24-hour nurse-led advice and health information service run by the NHS.
Aims:
To offer callers the opportunity to consult trained nurses around-the-clock for health advice and information.
Activities:
- Providing a nurse-led 24-hour health helpline.
- Also provides an information service on diagnosed conditions to details of health services. Information can be sent by post or given directly over the telephone.
- Helpline targeting those who do not need the 999 service, but are nevertheless uncertain whether to go to their GP or the accident and emergency department of their local hospital.
Also providing information on:
- What to do if you or your family are feeling ill.
- Particular health conditions.
- Local healthcare services, such as doctors, dentists or late night opening pharmacies.
- Self help and support organisations.
These services are based in Ambulance Service Trusts, enabling easy transfer of those who have underestimated their need for help.
The NHS Direct telephone service is also available in Wales on the same phone number.
A service called NHS24 is available for Scotland. It is similar to NHS Direct but is designed with the health needs of Scottish people in mind. (Please see link to this service on the NHS Direct website).
