Description:
National lending library of braille/print children's books.
Aims:
To increase the range and interest of material available to children learning to read braille, and to enable books to be shared with sighted friends, classmates and family. The books are also suitable for braille-reading adults sharing books with sighted children from 0 - 10 years of age.
Activities:
The ClearVision process takes standard children's picture books and adds the brailled text on clear plastic sheets so that the pictures and print text are still visible.
The books are chosen from popular fiction and National Curriculum related books for a wide range of ages and reading levels. There are currently over 3,500 titles available, most in either grade 1 (uncontracted) or grade 2 braille, or moan (an easier alternative to braille).
The collection includes novelty board books for the youngest children and a stimulating selection of books for newly fluent readers.
For schools only there is also a collection of tactile books.
ClearVision books are borrowed by over 1,000 schools, public libraries, resource bases, play-schemes and families throughout the UK.
Membership:
The subscription charge towards administration costs is:
- Families - Free of charge. They are initially sent 6 books and can change three at a time as often as they like.
- Institutions - £50.00 per year for 20 books, which can be changed up to 6 times a year.
