Description:
BLESMA is a National charity catering specifically for limbless serving and Ex-service men and women. The Association also accepts responsibility for the dependants of members.
Aims:
To promote the welfare of all those of either sex who have lost a limb or limbs, or one or both eyes, or the use of limbs as a result of service in any branch of Her Majesty's Forces or Auxiliary Forces and to assist needy dependants of such service limbless. Including those who lose a limb after service.
Activities:
- Provides a welfare service provided by the Associations National Welfare staff or in conjunction with the War Pensions Welfare service and with other tri-service casework organisations.
- Provides permanent residential and respite accommodation through its two Nursing and Residential Care Homes (Blackpool and Crieff in Perthshire).
- Provides a counselling service to individuals pre and post amputation.
- Furnishes advice on pensions and allowances. (This includes making representations to Government departments and having recourse to advocacy on behalf of members and their dependants at Pension Appeal Tribunals).
- Provides financial assistance to members and widows in the form of grants or by provision of aids and equipment.
- Operates a Welfare Visiting service to its members and widows.
- Plans and organises rehabilitation programmes for the amputee.
- Assists in finding suitable employment for amputees.
- Provides funding for research and development into artificial limbs.
- Provides funding for training in the deployment of Prosthetists and Orthotists.
- Acts as a consumer watchdog in respect of the provision of artificial limbs, wheelchairs and appliances.
