Description:
Library of art through sound and touch for visually impaired people.
Aims:
To open up the world of the arts and other varied subjects to visually impaired adults and children in their own homes.
Activities:
A free postal library service of 'living pictures' - tactile versions of pictures accompanied by a tape commentary and colour reproduction.
Services include:
- The Album Library - each Album contains at least 10 works of art, accompanied by tapes and coloured reproductions for sighted people. Topics covered include paintings, tapestries, stained glass, architecture, garden design and birds.
- BATs - tactile representations of works of art with taped commentaries in situ at over 20 galleries throughout the UK including the Tate, the National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Academy - a full list is obtainable from the Trust.
For children there is a growing range of touch and sound packs designed for use at home and/or in school. These include Living Picture Books which bring the magical world of illustrated story books to life and Teacher Resource Packs which are designed to include visually impaired pupils in the visual aspect of everyday classroom studies.
