Description:
Investigates complaints about the press.

Aims:
To enforce the code of practice which was framed by the newspaper and periodical industry and ratified by the Press Complaints Commission.

Activities:

• Investigates written complaints about the press, upholding the code of practice which deals with issues such as inaccuracy, intrusion and harassment.
• Operates a special telephone number to help members of the public who fear that the code of practice is likely to be breached in respect of their own affairs. This helpline will provide basic information about the publication or news agency involved and give the name, address, telephone and fax numbers of the relevant editor so that complainants may be speedily in touch.
• Also operates a Scottish helpline (see website for details).
