Description:
National campaigning organisation for homeless people.

Aims:

  • To provide practical support and innovative solutions for anyone who is homeless or who has a housing problem.
  • To use the evidence gathered from this work to bring about long-term changes that reduce and prevent homelessness and housing problems.

Activities:
Campaigning for a housing system which will ensure that every houshold in Britain has access to a decent and secure home that they can afford, within a mixed neighbourhood where people feel safe, can work and fulfil their potential.

Shelter's practical work:
Every year Shelter's services help well over 100,000 people.

  • More than 50 housing aid centres providing information, advice and advocacy to anyone with a housing problem.
  • Shelterline, a free, national helpline, providing advice and information 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  • Website which provides free housing information and advice.
  • Homeless to home projects working with formerly homeless families helping them to settle in their new home and neighbourhood.
  • The Street Homelessness project, working with local authorities and other voluntary organisations to reduce street homelessness.
  • The National Homelessness Advice Service providing advice and training on housing and homelessness to all Citizen's Advice Bureaux and others.
  • The Homework Project which seeks to prevent homelessness by providing opportunities for young people across the UK to learn about housing and homelessness.
  • The legal team, which works to ensure that the legal rights of homeless and badly housed people are protected and that the law is improved.
