Description:
Funding body for the arts in England.

Aims:
To promote quality in the arts, make the arts more accessible, expand the arts economy and deliver a high quality service.

Activities:
Funding - The council distributes the grant it receives from central government to arts organisations, artists and performers throughout the country. The council supports many art forms including dance, drama, film, video, music and visual arts.

Additionally, The Arts Council distributes National Lottery funds for the arts in England. Lottery funds at present are mainly for capital projects, such as the contribution of new buildings, the refurbishment of existing ones, buying equipment and commissioning new works of public art. Lottery funds are also used for stabilisation programmes designed to put arts organisations on a stable financial footing.

Library and Enquiry Service - The library holds a wide range of arts related material and is open by appointment to organisations it funds, other funding bodies and arts managers and policy researchers. It also provides a general enquiry service for matters dealing with the arts, funding and cultural policy.
