Description:
Services to meet crisis and emergency needs of everyone. The British Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Cresent Movement, the worlds largest humanitarian organisation.

Aims:

  • To respond to the crisis needs of individuals and communities.
  • To provide caring and emergency services throughout the UK.

Activities:
In the UK the service provides many activities including:

  • Emergency response:
    • Responds to all kinds of emergencies throughout the UK, from major incidents to transport accidents, evacuations, floods and fires.
  • First aid:
    • Training more than 150,000 first aiders every year to cope with emergencies both at work and in the home, and provide first aid cover at hundreds of public events.
  • Independent living:
    • Offers a range of services - including care in the home and transport assistance - to help those with health issues lead a full and independent life.
  • Refugee services:
    • Provides assistance to vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers in the UK, and enables victims of conflict and disaster to get in touch with their families.
  • International tracing and message services:
    • Works worldwide to restore and maintain contact between those separated by conflict or disaster.
  • Red Cross Centres:
    • Throughout the UK providing care and emergency services in local communities, working in hospitals and staffing first aid posts.
  • Transport and Escort Service:
    • Providing volunteer drivers and an ambulance service. Red Cross drivers will undertake short and long journeys for hospital appointments, family visits, difficult routes etc.
  • Medical Loan Service:
    • Depots throughout the country to meet urgent needs for short-term loan of medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walking frames and commodes. For use at home or on holiday.

Local Groups:
The British Red Cross has 35,000 trained volunteers and more than 2,500 staff working in almost every community around the UK as well as in many countries overseas.
