Description:
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a wasting of the muscles due to degeneration of nerve cells in the spinal cord. The wasting shows as muscle weakness, and depending on the severity of condition, can be severe and progressive. The conditon is also known as Werdnig Hoffmann Disease (Type 1) and Kugelberg Welander Disease (Type 3).

Aims:

  • To act as a support group.
  • To support research into SMA.
  • To raise public awareness of SMA.

Activities:

  • Gives support, information and advice on SMA for families and healthcare professionals.
  • UK network of local volunteers.
  • Runs annual conference weekends offering the opportunity to meet professionals, and others in similar situations in both formal and informal surroundings.
  • Funds are provided for research programmes dealing with SMA.
  • Funds are available to purchase special equipment for members.
  • Freephone helpline for families at time of diagnosis or in times of crisis or difficulty only.
  • Outreach Worker Service.

Membership:
Open to all parents and people who have SMA or an interest in the condition.
