Description:
They meet regularly on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, in term time, between 10am and 12noon at the Doncaster Partnership for Carers, Church Lane, Cantley (near the Water Towers).
Doncaster Autistic Society (DAS) was started by a group of committed parents in September 2002. This group had been researching the need for a more comprehensive advice and support service for those with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) , their families and carers, but decided to start the support group and attempt to secure funding for the services they wanted to provide.
The Society today still adheres to the original principals of the founders of DAS. As a volunteer self-help group they aim to provide support to anyone in the Doncaster Area with an ASD, their families and carers. They do this by holding regular get-togethers, events and family outings, much of which they are able to provide at a nominal cost to their service users. They can also provide a link to other services and self-help groups involved with ASD.
They are all parents of a child with an ASD or people with ASD themselves and know just what you might be going through - at whatever stage you might be at. Whether you've just had a diagnosis, starting school, transition from primary to secondary, leaving school or college - there will be someone out there who has gone through, or is going through the same thing. You needn't be alone - if you just want someone to listen to you, want to discuss problems that only people who have been through the same can understand, then call them. Many lasting friendships have been made through DAS between ASD children, siblings, parents/carers/grandparents and ASD adults.
The society is constantly changing and evolving and they welcome new members.
